Ridley Scott on Raised by Wolves

If you haven’t already seen Raised by Wolves, the action packed sci-fi thriller now streaming on HBO Max, you’re missing out. While reviews were mixed, based in part on the fact that the season had multiple directors and scriptwriters leading to a lack of cohesive storytelling, it’s still some quality television that’s often reminiscent of sci-fi classics like Alien. And there’s good reason for that, as Ridley Scott has been heavily involved on the project, and even directed the first two episodes.

“I was doing a film called The Last Duel, so I had to move on. I would definitely go back,” said Scott in an interview with Forbes, hoping for a second season. “The scripts that Aaron Guzikowski wrote were an inspiration. I would be one of the producers on it anyway because my company, Scott Free Productions, is behind it, but I read the show and thought, ‘Oh my God. This is great.’ I act very intuitively, and I thought I must do one but then said I’d do two. I stayed with it afterward, in post-production, because I’m a chronic grader, so I kept my hands on all the way through.”

Guzikowski added: “This was the dream. Something this big, it’s totally execution dependent. I was thrilled that we ended up at Ridley’s company but to have him executive producing, but then he decided to direct two episodes. It was a huge relief. You hope for that, but you don’t know if that will ever happen. Raised by Wolves is hugely ambitious. It requires a lot of thinking outside of the box. You need a huge amount of experience to pull off the kind of thing we are doing, and then the time you have to do it all? I couldn’t have hoped for a better situation.”

Details have yet to be announced for a second season, but the show holds much promise, so we expect those details to be announced soon.

Watching Your Favorite Warner Brothers Action Movies at Home

2020 and 2021 were supposed to be big years for Warner Bros action movies, with a ton of new releases in the works from years prior, films like Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984, a Suicide Squad followup, a new Godzilla vs. Kong offering, Dune, and Matrix 4, just to name a few. But of course, the pandemic had other plans, and with many theaters still closed for the foreseeable future, Warner Bros decided it was time for some drastic action.

While Warner Bros has already bumped up release dates for a number of films like Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984, they’ve decided that rather than continuing to bump release dates, they’d release all of their films on the HBO Max streaming service at the same time as their global theatrical releases.

“No one wants films back on the big screen more than we do,” said Ann Sarnoff, chief executive of WarnerMedia Studios in a statement. “We know new content is the lifeblood of theatrical exhibition, but we have to balance this with the reality that most theatres in the U.S. will likely operate at reduced capacity throughout 2021.”

Industry analysts have been weighing in on the effects they anticipate this move will have, but the fact of the matter is that nobody can predict the future. Will this move forever change the way we watch movies even after the pandemic is over? Only time will tell. In the meantime, we’ll be on the couch with some popcorn eagerly awaiting the new releases!

Plotlens Reviews: Bitter Fruits by Alice Clark-Platts

If you’re looking for a good read, one that’s sure to thrill, the team at Plotlens would like to recommend Bitter Fruits by Alice Clark-Platts.

A cross between a detective novel and a psychological thriller, Bitter Fruits Tells the tale of Detective Inspector Erica Martin’s first case in the university city of Durham, an investigation into the death of Emily Brabents, a first-year student, who is found dead in the river. Throughout her investigations, DI Martin dives into a close-knit college community that’s full of secrets, obsessions, jealousy, and a vicious online trolling culture. She also finds, rather unexpectedly, a confession by the student president, but should that confession be believed? And what of Daniel Shepherd? A Name that keeps popping up again and again throughout the investigation? What was his involvement?

Britter Fruits, simply put, is nothing short of a page turner, not to mention a deep dive into the effects of a closely knit community. At times procedural, at times eerie and atmospheric, it marks an impressive first effort by Clark-Platts, who already has two other books to her name. But don’t take out word for it, Author Paul Pilkington was quick to chime in with a review of his own, and we couldn’t agree with him more. Pilkington called Bitter Fruits “A thought-provoking, atmospheric and emotional page turning thriller – brimming with mystery and suspense. I absolutely loved this novel,” he added, “and devoured it from cover to cover.”

You’ll go Cuckoo Over These Thrilling Reads

With pandemic restrictions leaving many in need of a good thrill, the team here at Plotlens thought we’d recommend two great reads that you’ll go absolutely cuckoo for!

The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith. The Cuckoo’s Calling brings us into the world of war veteran and private investigator Cormoran Strike as he investigates the suicide of famous actress Lula Landry. While the plot may seem unfamiliar, the writing style may show some similarities to books you’ve already read and love, and there’s a good reason for that. Robert Galbraith, you see, is in fact the pen name of none other than beloved Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. The Cuckoo’s Calling is the first in the Cormoran Strike series, which already boasts an impressive five books.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. You may already be familiar with the film, it was released in 1975 to critical acclaim and tremendous commercial success. Starring Jack Nicholson, the movie would go on to be considered one of the greatest of all time, and it’s all based on Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel of the same name. Set in an Oregon psychiatric hospital, the book tells of the antics of a rebellious patient, as told from the perspective of “Chief” Bromden, a fellow patient who presents himself as deaf and mute. The book entertains while presenting an at-times harsh critique of psychiatric practices of the time.

Tess Gerritsen Meditates on Writing Dramatic Content

Romance can definitely be thrilling, but when it comes to penning a romance thriller, few can do it as well as Tess Gerritsen. The former Honolulu physician turned to writing in the 1980s,a childhood dream since her days growing up in San Diego reading Nancy Drew mysteries. Her first novel was published in 1987, and she never looked back. Earlier this year Gerritsen was interviewed for Profile Critics and was asked about her writing process. Her answer turned out to be more a meditation on writing dramatic content. Here’s what she had to say:

I wish I could tell you how I do it, but the truth is, storytelling is a mysterious process. Much of what I do is purely intuitive — knowing which way to steer a story to give it the biggest punch, when to throw in the curveball, where to place the plot “reveals.” When I read work by aspiring authors, the most common mistakes they make are about not having a sense of what’s dramatic. They’ll write pages and pages of action — car chases, gun battles, etc — and action itself is actually boring on the page. It’s tension keeps us engaged as readers. As a writer, I spend most of my time thinking up ways to create that tension, even if it involves just the minor details of life.

Harlan Coben Doesn’t Want Your Sympathy

Released in 2019, Harlan Coben’s Run Away became an instant fan favorite, not to mention a New York Times #1 Bestseller. A thrilling read from start to finish, Run Away tells the story of Simon Greene, a Wall Street financial advisor who hasn’t seen his drug-addicted daughter, Paige, in six months. He barely recognizes the daughter he finally finds, and when he approaches her, she runs away. The events that follow lead Simon through a complex trail of secrets, violence, and deception.

Simon is a complex character, often straddling the line between good and evil. When interviewed for The Strand Magazine in early 2019, Coben was asked if he took into consideration the audience’s sympathy when crafting Simon’s next moves. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’m not really conscious of anything like that when I’m writing. I’m just really trying to write the best story I can. I don’t typically stop along the way to say, “Oh no, he’s going to lose the audience’s sympathy.” I believe that leads to more formulaic writing. The thing about fiction in general is that your hero is traveling down the road of life and confronting the obstacles in his or her way. How you overcome those obstacles is basically what all narrative concerns. What’s really going through my head as I write is, “Okay, here he is traveling down this road; what’s he going to come across next?” I don’t really structure in a traditional sense. I just try to figure out what’s going to happen next.”
